Poetry returns to stage for second year in a row
November 14, 2017
The LTHS Theatre Board will present “Got Poetry? Volume II” in the Reber Center at NC on Nov. 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. Over 40 poems will be performed by the cast of just eight actors, who interpreted and staged the entire show themselves, with the aid of Director Ann Dudek.
“Poetry is difficult, beautiful and mysterious,” Dudek said. “Every word matters, and it creates a cool little puzzle to sort through, and I think that that creates some really cool opportunities for analysis.”
The Theatre Board produced “Got Poetry?” last year, where the actors of that show staged 67 poems.
“After the poetry showcase last year, we found that there were a lot more opportunities left to be explored in terms of character work, voice work, physicality and other techniques,” Dudek said. “The showcase allows us to explore more difficult techniques that we don’t always get to use in more traditional theatre.”
A poem is chosen for the show based on accessibility and difficulty of comprehension, Dudek said. Additionally, the actors wanted to keep an element of range in the choice of poems. Rather than all funny or all dramatic, actors chose a variety of poems that were all linked by common themes, such as crisis and perspective.
“Poetry opens up a doorway through which we can allow ourselves to be provoked by images, words, and ideas,” Dudek said. “It can give us so much to reflect on, and I think that this is a great group of actors that will bring the poems to life on the stage.”
Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for seniors and children. Admission is free for LT students with a student ID.
