The nerves built as diver Brynn Krantz ‘27, walked out on the diving board. Less than five seconds later, it was over. On Oct. 3, Krantz broke LT’s diving score pool record that had not been touched since 2014.
“It was unreal,” Krantz said. “It’s always been my dream to break [the record].”
Krantz scored a total of 263 points during six dives. After each dive, the diver is scored on a scale of one-10 points by three to six judges. The scores are then multiplied by the difficulty level of a dive.
Divers are required to perform one voluntary dive and five optional dives for a total of six dives for each meet. Voluntary dives are the simpler ones, such as a front dive, a back dive, a reverse dive, or an inward dive. Optional dives can be any dive except the one performed for the voluntary dive. The hardest dive Krantz performed was a front two and a half, with a difficulty level of 2.4.
This year, all of the girls on the dive team have nailed their reverse dive, the varsity and JV girls’ dive coach Julie McDermott said. There are 19 girls on the diving team, the most McDermott has ever had on a dive team. McDermott has been coaching girls’ diving for the last 27 years, 10 of which at LT.
“I love seeing the excitement in their faces when they learn a new dive,” McDermott said.
This season, McDermott hopes the girls will be able to send at least two divers to state with the goal of placing.
The girls dive team has been practicing hard in order to accomplish their goal. Their practices are every day after school, Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. In addition, there are meets and invites almost every Thursday and Saturday. Each week, the girls focus on different diving skills, McDermott said.
“I’m very pleased and very proud at how this season is going,” McDermott said.
The girls diving team is led by captains Kate Polomsky ‘25, and Gabby Kram ‘25.
“[My favorite thing about dive] is the entire team,” Polomsky said, a sentiment echoed by every diver interviewed. “We always encourage each other to go for hard dives.”
Whether the girls are chatting in the massive horse bathtub filled with hot water, eating pre-practice snacks, or complimenting each other on dives, the comradery, and love is evident.
“This is going to be a really good season,” McDermott said. “I’m excited.”
