LT boys hockey club finished last year’s season as Illinois West Conference Champions and is working this year to do just the same, as well as bring in lots of fans in support of their success.
“Being a sport that can’t have games at school makes it difficult to get fans in the stands when the boys play and have a student body cheering them on,” LT Hockey Director John Proctor said. “However, there are certain games, like the Hinsdale game, where many fans come to support. The energy of the students is spectacular because they’re so close to the action, and a great reason why students should come see a game.”
Varsity practices three times a week and typically have two or three games a week at Willowbrook Ice Arena, where the team has their own locker room designated to the LT club, Proctor said.
“People should be interested in hockey because it is by far the most exciting sport [due to] the celebrations, big hits, goals, and fast pace,” JV player Andrew Collins ‘26 said.
During practices, the team works on skills and techniques, whether it be skating, stick handling, or shooting techniques, Proctor said. They use some time in their locker room to view film and see how they can improve and be successful in games. When it comes to preparation for games, the team plans how to approach each team so they can win.
“The culture and the chemistry of the club have really evolved over the last four to five years, which has led to multiple championships, making us one of the top teams in the state,” Proctor said.
The weekend of Oct. 11, varsity and JV had the opportunity to travel to Louisville to play teams from all around the country, Proctor said.
“Qualities that make for a good player is a guy who gives 100% effort 100% of the time and isn’t afraid to sacrifice themselves for the team,” varsity player Blake White ‘25 said.
Because we can’t practice at the school it forces the team to have practice later at night, practice a lesser amount than other LT sports, and less student body at games, Proctor said.
“I’m looking forward to having a successful season and hopefully winning our league/conference again,” varsity player Charlie Walsh ‘26 said.
Their next game is Nov. 3 against New Trier Blue at Willowbrook Ice Arena at 8:30 p.m.
