Led by captains Tommy Niemic ‘25 and Anderson Palm ‘25, the boys golf team had a successful season. The team had a strong performance, going undefeated in dual meets, having a record of 9-0, and winning their conference and regionals.
“The team has worked a lot harder as the season has gone on, and the scores have reflected that,” varsity golfer Jacksen Almond ‘26 said.
Regionals was at the Fox Run golf course, and the team took three of the top five places. This allowed them to qualify for sectionals. The line up consisted of two juniors, two seniors and two sophomores.
“This team was very talented,” head coach Brian Kopecky said. “The players were a class act all year long.”
There were seven different players who led the team with a low score this season, Kopecky said. The team beat Hinsdale Central for the first time in 12 years. They also set a school record with their three-day tryout scoring.
“I wanted to challenge them, and they responded with a lot of low scores,” Kopecky said. “They were focused in practice and worked hard.”
At sectionals, the team placed fourth shooting 301, Kopecky said. They missed going to state by four shots. However, Palm qualified individually for state by shooting a 73.
“Our goal was to get to state as a team, but we came up a little short,” Kopecky said. “We didn’t play our best at the sectional, and we needed to because our sectional is the toughest in the state.”
The team’s goals in every tournament or dual consisted of playing smart, having each individual play to their strengths, playing the course, and being the player the opponents wanted to play with, Kopecky said.
“Competition was awesome,” Kopecky said.
Tournament finishes consisted of three second place finishes and one first-place finish, Kopecky said. Players had to play well to keep their spots in the line up.
“Being around the team is fun because there is a certain bond that everyone has with one another that brings the team together,” Almond said. “Some of my favorite moments were the long bus rides. The length was a pain at times, but with the team, they were a lot of fun.”
Palm was the leading scorer in nine-hole matches, all competitions, 18-hole rounds, and all shots on the team, Kopecky said. To start out the year, he shot 11 under par during the 54-hole tryouts. Palm placed 15th at state, shooting five over par.
“I am very proud of this group,” Kopecky said.
