This year LT girls volleyball started off its season strong, winning against Lockport Township High School on Aug. 27 in two sets. The team consists of six seniors, seven juniors and three sophomores.
“We have a lot of new faces on the varsity court,” Varsity Head Coach Jill Bober said. “We haven’t really gone into this season with a set lineup like we have in previous seasons.”
With only eight returners, they are getting used to the competitiveness and demanding games that come with the varsity level, Bober said. In addition, they are working out the nerves and energy that comes with playing with each other for the first time.
“It’s a disadvantage, but it’s also an advantage because other opponents haven’t seen our athletes on the court, so they don’t know what to expect from us,” Bober said.
Led by captains Kate Badrov ‘25 and Maddie Richards ‘25, the team hopes to have a competitive record, long playoff run, and good tournament finishes, Bober said. Additionally, they want to win conference, being a part of one of the most competitive conferences in Illinois. As they practice to achieve their goals, they want to maintain a competitive and inclusive environment.
“The captains are people we can look to for advice and guidance whether it be volleyball related or not and help us stay focused at practice,” Varsity Player Madison Jones ‘26 said. “We are all close and get along well, so it helps on and off the court with the team dynamic.”
Last year, being one of the top ranked teams in the state, LT had a 30-8 record and won the regional championship. Abby Markworth ‘24 broke the record for career assists. In addition, the team last year included three division-one athletes and two division-three athletes. Badrov will join the list of LT college athletes, attending Carthage College to play volleyball next year.
“I am really excited about this season and I love working with the girls so far,” Bober said.
The team has home games Oct. 1, Oct. 22, Oct 26, and Pink Out Oct. 8.
