Three-sport athlete, captain for all three teams, and several state appearances across all three sports, Brendan Whelton ‘24 has done it all in his time in LT athletics. Whelton has competed in cross country, swimming, and water polo all four years of high school.
When Whelton was a young kid, he began to compete in triathlons with his father. These races were where his first experiences in running and swimming came from.
“My dad and brothers were big into competing in triathlons so they got me into [them],” Whelton said. “I started triathlons when I was in kindergarten. I trained with my dad and every summer he did two or three triathlons so I would watch him compete. That’s where my love for running came from, it is also where I got into swimming.”
Whelton continued this passion for competing by running throughout elementary and middle school. By the time Whelton got to LT he had been running competitively for several years and had grown fond of running.
“I started doing a running club in elementary school and I realized I was pretty good at it,” Whelton said. “So I continued running in middle school and that went into high school. I’ve been in the sport for so long that I’ve developed a passion for running that has continued through my years at LT.”
Apart from running, Whelton has also swam for many years. Starting in the triathlons, he would go on to swim competitively and eventually began to play water polo.
“My dad was an All-American swimmer at Fenwick and played water polo,” Whelton said. “That was a big part of how I fell into competing in swimming. I started swimming when I was about 4, then I started water polo in sixth grade. My brothers were on the teams so that’s a reason I got into playing at LT.”
Although Whelton is not playing for a university next year, he plans to continue every sport at the club level for the next four years.
