Baseball swings into hot start

Lions hold wins over states top teams

Tucker King ‘25 follows through after throwing a fastball against York High School on April 15 (Klos/LION).

The baseball team got off to a 12-4 start after defeating notable in-state opponents such as #4 ranked Brother Rice High School on March 29 with a score of 7-3 as well as #2 ranked St. Laurence High School on April 17, with a score of 6-5. Left fielder Ryan Jackson ‘24 hit two home runs in the Lions win over the Brother Rice Crusaders, the first of which came on the opening pitch of the game.

“I’m starting to feel more in my hitting groove,” Jackson said. “I can’t always expect to be in my groove during the start of the season, but the earlier the better and I’m glad we have gotten the opportunity to showcase our teams skills against some of the best teams in the state so far.”

The Lions pitching rotation has proved to create trouble for opposing teams at the plate, holding two of the top teams to just three runs. University of Cincinnati commit Tucker King ‘25 and Michigan State University commit Brady Chambers ‘24 offer a unique and dominant duo on the mound.

Having a dynamic pitching rotation like we do helps contribute to our defensive philosophy which is to hold a team to three runs or less. At the high school level we feel like if we can hold a team to three runs or less, then we should be able to win the game,” varsity head coach Kevin Diete said. “By spreading out the workload among multiple starters, it allows our pitchers to get adequate rest between starts which they would need anyway due to the IHSA Pitch Count guidelines. This helps prevent overuse injuries and allows pitchers to perform at their best throughout the season.”

King is currently ranked as the state’s #6 pitcher in the 2025 class by Prep Baseball Report (PBR). On Feb. 28, prior to the start of this high-school season, he committed to continue his studies and baseball career at the University of Cincinnati.

“I think what’s made us successful this season is our unity and our unwavering trust,” King ‘25 said. “We trust each other on the field, and that trust translates into wins for us.”

As the regular season concluded on May 14, the playoffs began one day later on May 15 (after LION’s print deadline).

“The main focus is continuing to win the regular season, but we will be prepared for anyone we may have to face in the postseason,” Jackson said.

The team will next play in the state playoffs against an undetermined opponent on May 16.

All statistics are according to Maxpreps and Prep Baseball Report (PBR).
