Lyons Township varsity football opened its season with a dominant 24-0 victory over Warren on Friday night at Bennett Field. The young but talented team made an early-statement with their fast-striking offense and rock-solid defense throughout the game.

“We were the underdogs going into this game, we wanted to come out and show what we are capable of as a young and talented team,” running back Reggie Terrell ‘17 said.

In the first quarter, the defense completely shut down Warren’s offense with tight coverage and forced turnovers. Points came easy after quarterback Ben Bryant ’18 threw a bullet pass to wide receiver Brandon Fischer ‘18 for the first touchdown, which fired up the team and the large crowd. Terrell also scored with a running touchdown and Bryant was able to connect with receiver Jimmy Saracco ‘16 for the team’s third touchdown of the game. Bryant and Terrell led the attack for the Lyons offense and the team was also supported by a field goal made by kicker Carlos Schultz ‘16.

“I learned a lot through this game, especially what we need to improve,” Bryant said. “We have a long way to go, but it was very exciting getting on the field and showing who we are and what we can accomplish.”

The Lyons certainly proved that they are a team that is capable of going up against a physically formidable opponent. The team hopes to continue its success on Sept. 4 when it plays at home against Morton at 7:30.

“Our goal as a team is to get to state and to finish at the top of our conference,” Terrell said.
