Church League Power Rankings: Week Six
February 4, 2015
This season of Church League has been like none other. There have been three number ones, several upsets, and amazing buzzer beaters. We are just past the halfway point of the season, and everything is still in question; that is, except the number one team.
1. First Presbyterian
Another strong showing from the leagues best team, beating a Saint Mary’s team by thirty point. Sure, St. Mary’s doesn’t put in a ton of effort and some of their better players were absent, but beating a team by 30 points and scoring 70+, that indicates a championship level of play. This team, barring any major injuries or absences will continue to win games, and will likely, remain undefeated.
2. SFX Dillon
SFX Dillon got some much deserved rest after 5 straight victories. Their schedule in the next couple weeks gets tougher than their first five games. If SFX Dillon is going to lose, it will likely be in one of their approaching games. From this point on look for close, low scoring (possibly overtime games) where SFX Dillon grinds it out to get the W.
3. SJC Dark Blue
SJC Dark Blue was originally a team I wrote off at the beginning of the year. They seemed to struggle with some very easy opponents, but they have turned it around, sporting an impressive 4-1 record. This team seems to be the junior counterpart to SFX Dillon, great athletes, amazing defense and an ability to grind it out and get wins. This team has a lot to prove, but their certainly a better team than I thought they were.
4. Grace Lutheran
Grace Lutheran and SJC Dark Blue are really three A and three B, but I give the slight edge to Dark Blue for a couple reasons. As SFX Kuchler falls to SJC Maroon, GLC’s last second loss to the depleted Kuchler squad seems less impressive. Aside from that, GLC is a super talented team with real potential to be a contender.
5. SFX Kuchler
Another awful loss for a talented team. SFX Kuchler however, remains relevant, due to their prolific ability to score. If this team can figure out some of their difficulties and attendance issues, this team remains a contender, and the second best offensive team in the league behind First Presbyterian.
6. SJC Light Blue
With Mike Owen’s (Nazareth) injury and recent commitment to play college football, it looks like the SJC Light Blue team might be doomed. Owens made this team one of the best in the league, and now it looks as if he might not play another game of Church League. They’ll stay in the top ten with the slight hope that Owens comes back or they figure out how to win without him, but if that isn’t the case, they won’t stay in the rankings for long.
7. SC Purple
And all of a sudden, SC Purple shoots up the rankings with a string of a couple impressive wins. They are a really talented team who, while sometimes reckless with their shot choice, are talented enough that they can get away with it. One problem to watch with this team however is that their big men demand on playing like they are guards. They need to get back in the paint if they want to succeed.
8. SFX Hickey
SFX Hickey gets another win to add to the resume, but there are some serious question marks surround this team. They look to have the most athletic team in the league, headlined by their perimeter players who play with extreme skill and finesse. But the shot selection just isn’t there for Hickey. They don’t always look for the best shot, which is baffling because they pass the ball like it’s a hot potato in practice.
9. LCA Senior
LCA Senior secures a really nice win against a talented team. LCA Senior is a relatively the same team last year who were suprisingly successful and clutch. LCA Senior looks to be getting some of it’s mojo back and could remain in the top ten if they keep it up.
10.SJC Maroon
SJC Maroon had an unbelievable upset, as in I literally didn’t believe it when I first received the text. But sure enough, SJC Maroon came on top with a victory over SFX Kuchler. This team really stumbled in the earlier parts of the year, and the simple solution to beating the team was to contain Charlie Harrigan. I’m not going to pretend that SJC Maroon is one of the better teams in the league, but this performance against SFX Kuchler shows us that they can certainly give some top teams a scare.
As always, enjoy these power rankings and remember that God is love, but ball is life.
