Molly’s Cupcakes is a bakery that is famously known in the Chicagoland area, having locations in Lincoln Park, River East, West Loop, and South Loop. They recently opened their newest location at the Oakbrook Center. After learning that it was voted one of the 10 best cupcake bakeries in the country and won the first season on “Cupcake Wars,” I knew I needed to see what all the hype was about. Their cupcakes definitely did not disappoint.

When I first arrived, I was expecting a long line or crowd in the store, considering the amount of praise these cupcakes have received. Surprisingly, it was not crowded at all. I went around 1 p.m. on a Sunday, which was probably a less busier time. The staff was very welcoming, and immediately greeted me as I walked through the large glass doors.  It is situated near popular stores such as Urban Outfitters and Lululemon, which is a prime location, considering the amount of foot traffic in that area of the mall.

The bakery itself was fairly small, but felt very open and bright with window walls surrounding patrons. The store was decorated with an abundance of display cases showing all of the baked goods they have to offer. Shades of pastel blue, orange, and green added to the bright, calming vibe of the entire store.  While they are most famous for their cupcakes, they also offer many other treats so there’s something to please everyone.

I ended up trying two of their “famous center-filled” cupcakes ($3.75 each), which is what they are most known for. Of the 14 different options, I chose the Cake Batter and Salted Caramel Butterscotch. The Cake Batter cupcake was a vanilla confetti cake with vanilla buttercream and raw edible cake batter in the middle. It had a strong vanilla flavor and perfectly encapsulated the cake batter flavor I was looking for.

My personal favorite was the Salted Caramel Butterscotch, a flavor I had really high hopes for, since I usually love salted caramel flavored treats. It was a vanilla cupcake with salted caramel buttercream and caramel drizzle on top, but what really made it spectacular was the butterscotch caramel pudding in the middle. Although both of the frostings on the cupcakes were not that sweet, the fillings compensated for it, which ended up complimenting the frosting really well.

For two cupcakes, the total was $7.50, making them reasonably priced. Although the cupcakes were very delicious and high quality, I do not think I would make a trip to the mall solely to get these cupcakes. They are the perfect treat to get after a long day of shopping at the mall, and I would recommend them to anyone who happens to be shopping at Oakbrook. Molly’s Cupcakes is located at 717 Oakbrook Center, Oakbrook and is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. These cupcakes will definitely cure your sweet tooth cravings.
