Anyone within the community knows that LT loves its sports. From the big crowds at the Friday night football games to the athlete of the week posts, it is obvious that the students and staff take great pride in the athletic programs.
At LT, where sports are deeply embedded into our identity, reputation, and culture, it is important to strive for excellence. In striving for these high standards, we must reevaluate how we approach coaching positions and consider outsourcing these roles to more qualified candidates.
Currently, many coaching positions are filled by faculty members. While their dedication and familiarity with the school and community are appreciated, some faculty can lack the specialized training, strategy, and experience to maximize the potential of student-athletes and the teams. Settling for less simply because they are part of the faculty is a disservice to the community and the students.
Outsourcing coaching positions to more qualified candidates has many advantages. Our athletes could have a deeper understanding of the game, elevate the performances of our teams, and minimize injuries. Their knowledge can be the difference between a good season and a championship.
In strengthening our programs, it opens the door to many more connections for students. Not only do experienced coaching staff bring connections but we will be able to gain more recognition from colleges. For many students, getting scholarships and access to a higher education can be a life-changing experience.
Although the faculty can build a relationship with athletes during the school day and understand the community, non-faculty coaches can slowly become a part of the LT culture as they go through more years of coaching at LT. Additionally, these more reputable coaches can excite incoming freshmen and give them a boost for building a relationship. Having more people at LT with the sole purpose of coaching gives them more time and experience in communicating with the students, parents, and community.
However, taking on professional coaches does not mean abandoning our faculty or current staff. They can still play important roles in assisting or being mentors for our teams. The combination of professional and faculty coaches can create an ideal environment that upholds the sport’s morale and increases the athletes’ benefits.
This is not only an investment in the athletic department but an investment in the whole school. Successful athletic programs can increase school spirit, attract students, and boost donations. By strengthening sports programs, we strengthen the school’s reputation and culture. Outsourcing coaching positions to more qualified candidates does not mean leaving our values but reinforcing them. By prioritizing expertise and excellence, we ensure that our athletic programs remain a source of pride and a platform for student success for years to come.
