Tryfecta, episode 1: Fry Guys

Tommy Layden, Quinn Riordan, and Lizzie Patel

We set out to give readers and viewers idea where to get the best fries based on a few different criteria. They are as follows: flavor/saltiness, bang for your buck, crispiness, warmth, overall taste, and aesthetic.  Each of these criteria are judged on a scale of 1 to 5 points, as well as an overall vibe check (where the purveyor either received a check or did not).

  1. Chic-Fil-A
    1. Flavor/Saltiness: 4
    2. Bang for your Buck: 2.5
    3. Crispiness: 3
    4. Warmth: 1
    5. Overall Taste: 3
    6. Aesthetic: 3
    7. Vibe Check: ✓
    8. Grand Total: 2.75/5 points

Starting off at the top of the lineup was Chic-Fil-A. The service there is always great and they of course said “my pleasure” after taking our order. The service and friendliness got the fries a vibe check, but it all goes downhill from there. The flavor was lacking, they weren’t very warm, looked average and for what you paid, you did not get much.

  1. Burger King
    1. Flavor/Saltiness: 2
    2. Bang for your Buck: 3
    3. Crispiness: 2
    4. Warmth: 5
    5. Overall Taste: 2
    6. Aesthetic: 3
    7. Vibe Check: ✘
    8. Grand Total: 2.83/5 points

The second trip we made was across the street to Burger King. It was pretty disappointing from start. The service was slow and they seemed irritated with us. The fries themselves were equally as weak; aside from being hot enough to burn the roof of your mouth, the positives were fair and few. While they lacked flavor and their overall taste was lackluster, for the small price of $2.69 you get a lot of fries. They lacked positive attitude and did not give us the receipt so this meant that they also failed the vibe check.

  1. Arbys
    1. Flavor/Saltiness: 5
    2. Bang for your Buck: 4
    3. Crispiness: 4
    4. Warmth: 4
    5. Overall Taste: 5
    6. Aesthetic: 5
    7. Vibe Check: ✓
    8. Grand Total: 4.5/5 points

At the third stop on our adventure the service was good and the fries blew us away. They had good flavor without being overly salty and the crispiness was perfect. They were a perfect temperature to eat right away and they looked enticing. The overall taste was great and they easily passed the mandatory vibe check.

  1. Popeyes
    1. Flavor/Saltiness: 4.5
    2. Bang for your Buck: 5
    3. Crispiness: 3
    4. Warmth: 4
    5. Overall Taste: 4.5
    6. Aesthetic: 4
    7. Vibe Check: ✓
    8. Grand Total: 4.16/5 points

Wow, Popeyes was our second to last stop but was arguably one of the best. The flavor was great, the crispiness and warmth was near perfect and the portion is sizeable for the low cost. They are unique in the sense that they have a cajun seasoning which is logical for a restaurant whose slogan is “Louisiana Fast”. Editors note: there are no words in the english language that can adequately describe the feeling obtained from eating a Spicy Chicken Sandwich (but that will be discussed at a later time).

  1. Mcdonalds
    1. Flavor/Saltiness: 1
    2. Bang for your Buck: 3
    3. Crispiness: 1.5
    4. Warmth: 4
    5. Overall Taste: 2
    6. Aesthetic: 2
    7. Vibe Check: ✘
    8. Grand Total: 2.25/5 points

Mcdonalds was shockingly underwhelming, and they failed the vibe check because the fries were just awful. They weren’t very salty or flavorful.  They also lacked crispiness, and overall taste and aesthetic wasn’t overly pleasing. The only area they were successful in was they came out pretty hot. The big take away here is get fries anywhere but Mcdonald’s.

  1. Wendys
    1. Flavor/Saltiness: 2
    2. Bang for your Buck: 3
    3. Crispiness: 0
    4. Warmth: 3
    5. Overall Taste: 2
    6. Aesthetic: 2.5
    7. Vibe Check: ✘
    8. Grand Total: 2.08/5 points
