Newly formed band, Boygenius, sells out Thalia Hall Nov. 12, 13
November 17, 2018
The entire audience was silent as Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus stood on the edge of the Thalia Hall stage performing their final song for the night “Ketchum, ID,” acoustically. The audience was captivated by their soothing voices and beautiful guitar chords. The venue was quiet but as the song progressed the crowd began to belt out the lyrics: “I am never anywhere/Anywhere I go/When I’m home I’m never there/Long enough to know.”
The recently formed band, Boygenius, includes Indie rock artists Baker, Bridgers and Dacus. The band recorded its EP “boygenius” in June of 2018 and it was released Nov. 9. The EP consists of six collectively written and performed songs.
The performance began with Dacus performing a new song that she said isn’t supposed to be released for another year. She then performed a set of about five songs. My favorite of Dacus’ songs was called “Night Shift.” She had an amazing voice and I enjoyed all of her songs. After Dacus, the crew came and rearranged the stage.
Next, Bridgers, my personal favorite, came on stage and began with one of her most popular songs, “Smoke Signals.” Bridgers also performed some of her popular songs such as “Scott Street,” “Motion Sickness,” and “Funeral,” as well as “Everything is Free” by Gillian Welch, with her drummer, Marshall. When Bridgers played “Motion Sickness” the whole crowd was singing along. Because it is one of her most upbeat songs, Bridgers often made jokes about how she only sings sad songs and it was exciting to see her perform one of my favorite songs.
Next up was the headliner Baker who opened with her song “Everybody Does” and just about everyone in the whole venue was shouting this song out: “I know myself better than anybody else/And you’re gonna run/You’re gonna run when you find out who I am/I know I’m a pile of filthy wreckage you will wish you’d never touched/But youre gonna run when you find out who I am/Yeah, you’re gonna run.” Dacus and Bridgers both opened for Baker but they all completed full sets of songs. Baker’s setlist was a little bit longer than the others because she was headlining. She performed many of her well known songs and before this concert I was not familiar with Baker, but now I am constantly listening to her original and memorable music.
After each artist performed their own set they all performed together. All three artists have similar styles which makes them extremely compatible together. After changing the stage for the fourth time of the night, Boygenius walked onto the stage in their custom designed jackets that were all individual to their personalities and related to the songs they crafted for their EP. The three were extremely enjoyable to watch; their chemistry really presented itself on stage. At one point, Baker was performing a guitar solo and Brigers and Dacus went down on their knees to praise her. The band’s songs were both powerful and thought provoking. You could tell that the band really loved what they were doing.
