Anti-Trump protesters are misguided
November 15, 2016
Following Donald J. Trump’s victory in the U.S. Presidential race, anti-Trump supporters erupted into protest outside the White House and in many major cities around the country. Clinton supporters were seen burning American flags and clashing with Trump supporters.
While protesters have the right to exercise their first amendment rights, they have no ground to oppose the president-elect and must accept the fact that Trump is going to be the next president. Not accepting the results is being closed-minded before Trump is given the chance to prove himself. There is going to be a Trump presidency regardless of rioting, so we must work with Trump rather than protest against him.
Many protesters are mad about the election because Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won the popular vote yet lost in electoral college. However, that is a non sequitur because if you are unhappy about Trump being elected by the electoral college, then protest the system not the man himself. He gave a speech after being elected calling for unity. Yet, that did not matter the protesters. The only thing that mattered was that their candidate lost.
No matter who is elected president, people should stick to their morals. To all the Clinton supporters who are protesting Trump right now by burning flags and evoking violence, stick to your slogans of “love trumps hate” and “stronger together.” Just because the candidate who campaigned off those slogans did not win does not mean you should abandon these messages. Trump is now the president for all Americans, not just his supporters. Instead of hoping he does not do a good job, work with him.
We must accept the facts of the election and work with what we have. Not giving Trump a chance is like being on a ship and trying to sink it. Not everyone’s party can win an election but we must not let parties divide our country. We must unite behind the winner to make the next four years count.
