The Women in Sports Empowerment club (W.I.S.E.), is a new club, sponsored by teacher Jessica Lee and founded by two LT students, Devin Blake ’26 and Olivia Dvorak ’26. The club meets every other Wednesday at SC in room C211, starting at 3:15 p.m.
“Our main goal is to give girls in sports more recognition,” Blake said. “In our meetings, we talk about the history of women in sports, and trying to get involved in volunteering.”
The club is the very first of its kind at LT, as there has never been a sports empowerment club dedicated to female athletes in the school’s history.
“We have encouraged our members to volunteer at Girls on the Run, and we further contributed to LT student council Secret Santa, sponsoring a girl who asked for sports equipment,” Blake said.
Girls on the Run is a national non-profit organization that encourages young girls to stay healthy mentally, and physically. They do this by going on runs, and participating in various activities, while also bonding with the other girls.
Almost all of the club’s members are female athletes, but anyone is welcome, Blake said.
“In our meetings, we play games, make Instagram posts, make posters, as well as talk about volunteer opportunities, upcoming games, and future plans for the club,” Blake said.
Carolyn Sendaydiego ‘26, is a recent member of the club and is a female athlete herself.
“I am a part of Girls Track and Field and Girls Swim and Dive,” Sendaydiego said. “The goal of W.I.S.E. is to increase attendance for female sporting events and increase attention to their achievements.”
The club has attended a variety of female sporting events, such as basketball games or gymnastics competitions, Sendaydiego, who is also a LION newspaper reporter, said. They also try to fundraise in order to support the community of female athletes.
“We also encourage girls to try out for LT sports with our Instagram posts, @lths.wise,” Blake said.
A portion of the fundraising money goes to poster supplies, markers, paint, etc. This is to bring support to the girls competing, and further school spirit.
“It was really cool to watch our accomplished girls basketball team, since I was unaware of how skilled they were,” Sendaydiego said. “As a female athlete, I know there is minimal attendance to our events, and not as many people really care about us, but that doesn’t affect our abilities, or spirit.”
The next club meeting will be on March 26, in SC room C211.
