As the day came to a close on March 17, 2025, some students during a SC passing period witnessed a physical altercation. According to communication sent out via email by Principal Jennifer Tyrrell, a fight among students occurred around 2:15 p.m. No other information was released about the students involved nor the cause of the altercation.
Tyrrell stated in the email that the Western Springs Police Department was and is continuously involved with LT’s handling of the situation. LT’s own Student Handbook clearly outlines its policy towards violence.
“Use of physical means to resolve disputes will not be tolerated,” the 2024-25 District 204 Student Handbook states. “Use of physical force will be subject to discipline unless the student who used physical force did so in reasonable self-defense. Self-defense does not include hitting the other student.”
As of March 20, the police department has not made it clear if there are any charges brought against any involved students. Per the Western Springs Police Department website, a report is released once a week detailing any arrests and crimes, and details of the incident may be included. The report is expected to be released next Monday or Tuesday.
In a number of widely circulated videos, it appears as though at least four individuals were involved in the altercation that went on for approximately one minute near the main entrance before a staff member appeared. Throughout the fight, a water bottle appeared to be used as a weapon, escalating the altercation.
Tyrrell reiterated in the email that LT greatly values student safety and supporting students.
“If you feel, at any time, that your student needs support, please contact Student Services at 708-579-6343 at NC or 708-579-6510 at SC,” Tyrrell said.
