Plymouth Place is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the community for over 80 years but now is setting its sights on the future of intergenerational living, Paddy Homan, senior director of Philanthropy at Plymouth Place said.
Starting this year in mid-February, Plymouth Place will be funding annual scholarships to multiple high schools, such as LT and Nazareth Academy. Along with this will be a scholarship opportunity for teens who volunteer their time at Plymouth Place to encourage furthering their education into any career they want.
“I work in philanthropy, so I work with people who want to make a meaningful impact, that’s where the scholarship fund came about,” Homan said. “We want to play our part in the community. We want to scaffold others in their learning and give access to education for those that need to better themselves.”
As a result of this scholarship, Plymouth Place hopes to overall connect with the student applicants and hopes to encourage them to do well in life, Homan said.
“When I sit on the scholarship committee, there are people that want to do nursing, many people want to become psychologists, criminologists, doctors, lawyers,” Homan said. “But they have to have a passion for service and getting involved with giving back.”
Two scholarships of $1,000, along with four runner-up scholarships of $250, are offered at both LT and Nazareth, Martha Klima-Gamble, Senior Director of People Services, said. To qualify for this scholarship, students will need to adhere to the award criterion, which includes currently being enrolled as a senior at LT and Nazareth High School while playing an active role in community service.
If a student is interested in working at Plymouth, they will need to apply for an open position and interview with the hiring manager. The student would need to work about four hours for three or four days a week, but working at Plymouth is not necessary for the scholarship. Applications for the scholarship will be released around mid-February with the deadline for applications being April 1. Checks will be awarded to students in May.
“We connect with students, and we really want them to do well in life, we want them to be successful,” Homan said.
