Best Buddies is a club at LT that matches students without disabilities in a one-on-one friendship for a full academic year with a student with disabilities. The club hosts some type of celebration nearly every month. On Oct. 30 they will be hosting their Halloween party, one of their bigger celebrations.
“We will do a costume parade, we have a costume contest, we do stations where we have different games and different activities for the students to go to,” Julie McDermott, one of the club’s sponsors, said.
The event has remained relatively consistent throughout the years, with club officers using ideas from previous years, Co-vice President Tess Holmes ‘26 said.
“We’re going to do a mummy wrap game,” McDermott said. “This year, we’re [also] doing pizza, and we’re charging the cost [of] the pizza and the snacks we’re going to provide.”
It’s going to cost $3 for participants to get into the event to pay for the pizza and snacks. This money doesn’t have the goal of fundraising, but it shouldn’t discourage participation and attendance, Mcdermott said.
“The officers, having been in the club for a few years, take ideas [from] previous years and then they bring the ideas to the sponsors. [We then decide] what would work best,” McDermott said.
Officers mostly spend time making sure that all the buddies are matched up with members into buddy families so that everyone is included, Holmes said.
“We cut down the officers to make it more impactful and to talk it out more,” Grace Ross ’26, an officer, said.
There are three sponsors of the club McDermott, Brianna Basic, and Cassandra Niego, Holmes said.As well as several officers including three presidents and two co-vice presidents.
“I feel like the buddies actually get really excited about Halloween, so it’s fun to see their costumes and talk about [them],” Holmes said.
Last year, there were nearly 100 participants, and this year, they are expecting between 100 and 120 participants to come celebrate.
“I’m so excited to go to the Best Buddies Halloween Party,” club member Morgan Blake ‘26 said. “I think it’s really fun. Everyone should attend.”
