As construction at LT continues, the G-wing is still being blocked off, and hallways are becoming increasingly congested, causing many students to be late for their classes.
“We understand that construction has changed some things for students, and we are trying to make accommodations to that as best as we can,” Assistant Principal Greg Gardner said.
Due to the construction, the lunch rooms have switched from D-wing to the gyms in H-wing, Gardner said. This has caused some congestion in the halls, so LT faculty has added an extra two minutes to the passing period after lunch so that students can get through the busy areas.
However, even with these accommodations the problem is not fully solved and many students are still having trouble getting to class on time.
“Even with the two extra minutes added it is still super hard for us students to get to class on time,” LT Student Eve Muscato said. “I even had to switch study hall teachers because my old study hall teacher gave me eight tardies and two detentions for being late to study hall after lunch. This was so frustrating for me because it wasn’t even possible for me to get to class on time.”
Unfortunately, this will go on for the whole school year because construction won’t be finished till next August, Gardner said. Since many students like Muscato are still having trouble getting to class, there has been a relatively new policy that teachers should follow.
“When a student is late to class we like to encourage our teachers to first talk to the student before giving them a tardy right away,” Gardner said. “This way, students can explain if it’s from construction or something else and the right adjustments can be made for the student.”
Until then, Muscato and the rest of the sophomore class will have to deal with this until next school year when they move to NC.
“I just can’t wait to be away from the construction next school year and to be able to get to class without having to walk all around the whole building,” Muscato said.
