SC has had ongoing construction projects over the summer and continuing into the school year in the former cafeterias, bathrooms, and the G wing hallway. The sophomore and freshman students must eat in gyms one and two on the first floor of the school, because of the construction.
“The construction not only makes me change my routes but also, after eating lunch in the gyms there is only one way to get out, which has become very overcrowded,” Jillian Yates ‘26 said. “This has made me late to my study hall class almost every day.”
Because of the construction, students are no longer able to access a large amount of G Wing, the courtyard, the old cafeterias, and parking permits will not be sold to students with their licenses due to a lack of parking spots, Associate Principal Greg Gardner said. Currently, the G Wing is being demolished to make way for the new cafeteria. Previously, it housed the music department, which is now holding classes in the upper boys gymnastics gym. The former cafeteria will become the new home for the music department. The old music classrooms were outdated and no longer met the needs of the music students. The new space will feature three larger classrooms for orchestra, choir, and band, along with new practice rooms and a dedicated percussion room. The school will also gain three additional general classroom spaces.
“In my first period class, I can hear them drilling on the roof, which can be annoying at times,” Yates said. “Also, during sixth period class, there are times when my classroom slightly shakes, which also shakes the board.”
According to the LT Webpage, the construction is set to be completed by 2026. The $40 million renovations are to improve both campuses at LT; however, the main focus at the moment is SC construction. NC will start its renovation in 2025.
“The decision to build a new cafeteria was made to create a more modern space that not only meets the needs of our students during lunch but also serves as a student commons before and after school,” Gardner said.
It will also serve as a meeting space for clubs, activities, and athletic teams after school and on weekends.
“While we can’t completely eliminate noise and vibrations from the major construction, these updates help reduce them,” Gardner said. “We’ve also worked with our contractor to pause construction during state testing at SC to prevent distractions. We believe that, despite the current challenges, the positive impact of the updated facilities will greatly enhance the student experience at LT in the long run.”
