Every year, the LION staff submits work to journalism contests sponsored by the Northern Illinois School Press Association. The results were announced at the annual convention at College of DuPage on April 20, 2018.
NEWSPAPER CATEGORIES
Overall newspaper contest (three consecutive issues, 1, 2, and 3), from fall 2017 were submitted for judging: Lion won the “Golden Eagle award,” the highest distinction the paper could win
NEWS WRITING: Senior Greta Markey earned “Honorable Mention” for her article about the life of Tony Burkes
FEATURE WRITING Senior Grant Campbell earned “Blue Ribbon” for his article about Jack Kunkle inspiring a fiction writer
EDITORIAL WRITING: Junior Grace Dekoker earned “Blue Ribbon” for her argument about immunization rates
INDIVIDUAL IN-DEPTH REPORTING: Junior Lars Lonnroth earned “Blue Ribbon” for his article on grassroots activism
SPORTS: Senior Mikaela Larson earned “Honorable Mention” for her article on Jake Elliott
REVIEW WRITING: Senior Maddy Cohen earned “Blue Ribbon” for her review of the film “It”
COLUMN WRITING: Senior Spiro Kass earned “Honorable Mention” for his opinion supporting multiculturalism
GRAPHICS: Seniors Maddy Cohen, Sarah Grier and Lindsey Hauch earned “Blue Ribbon” for the feminism page design
EDITORIAL CARTOON: Senior Sydney Kaehler earned “Honorable Mention” for her cartoon titled “A Hollywood Christmas”
